So I was just browsing around on the Internet looking to learn more about surrogacy, and I ran across some information on sex selection and "family balancing" as they called it. Perhaps this topic is something that many of you know about, but I can say that I didn't realize this option existed. I'm a little old fashioned myself, and want to be surprised when I finally get to have my first child. I don't think I'd want to be faced with choosing. On the other hand, I don't see what it would harm. Why not get that little boy you've always wanted after having six girls in a row (or vice versa)?

I would like to hear from any of you who have any personal experience with sex selection. I would also be interested to know your thoughts on this issue. I am sure that there have already been ethical debates on this topic, which I've obviously missed since I was clueless about sex selection until like five minutes ago, so I figure a good place to learn more is right here on surrogatemother.com.

Clue me in folks : )

I think it's funny how in almost every culture on the planet right now, boys seem to have such a higher significance that girls, but if you think about some of the ancient cultures like in ancient Egypt, inheritance happened through the female line of a family, because you always knew who the mother way and not always the father.

Ok, that being said...I personally could never reduce or eliminate a pregnancy because of gender. but I understand why some people could, would, and do.

I could imagine that giving birth to a son when you are a carrier of the ALD disease (highly debilitating and death usually occurs by the age of 10) it would be easier to have an abortion before you got to know the child as opposed to having, raising, and then loosing your child to a horribly painful disease with no cure. But in these cases being female is not a saving grace either. Females can carry the genes that cause diseases even when they aren't prone to having it themselves.

It's sad that some countries and cultures abuse this practise, and I can only hope that they achieve a state of enlightenment before it's to late to repair the imbalance in their societies. I know that in many places in Canada, Dr's and Radiologists can and do refuse to reveal gender before birth, because of the possibility of the parents having a late-term abortion and the complications that arise from it.

If I could'a done it with my own pregnancies, I would've. I have 4 boys. I love my 4 boys dearly, but it would've been nice to have ONE girl. lol
